Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Moon
My son Rudy is 7 months old. Every night I put him to bed following the exact same routine. Change diaper. Put on lotion, then pajamas. Read Goodnight Moon. Put him in crib and kiss him goodnight.

Sometimes when I am reading Goodnight Moon, I am with Rudy. I am sharing the experience of hearing the words, looking at the pages, and being mesmerized by the simplest things happening around us. I am filled with joy in these moments.

Other times when I am reading Goodnight Moon, I am physically there but my mind is somewhere else. Thinking about work, about a chat with my wife, about weekend plans. If I am lucky, I’ll realize this before the story ends. Sometimes I miss the experience completely.

I only have so many opportunities in my life to read Goodnight Moon to my son. While I read him this story every night, each time is precious. I want to be present for it. Sometimes I miss it.

What parts of your day are the most precious? Share them below.

Are you deeply present for them, or do you sometimes miss them?
